UG40DI retrofit solution

This modification of the UD40-DI governor maintains the proven mechanical-hydraulic reliability of the UG-40D and adds the electronic reliability of the Woodward MAS driver box.

The upgrade to the UG-40DI will provide the following advantages to end users:

    The E-box functionality and fuel limiter assembly is replaced by a modified UG-40 governor and a small cabinet and the start fuel limiter assembly located in the UG40-DI governor is replaced with an on/off adjustable solenoid that provides the start limiter functionality.
    UG25+ Governor

    This fast-acting, high-work-output governor has no need for any auxiliary devices such as a start booster or oil cooler. Two work output versions are available. The UG-25+ offers speed control with software-selectable speed set points, dynamics, fuel limiting, and start behavior. All it takes is a PC to adjust and download configuration data. Front panel and external speed settings make synchronization and load sharing easy for generator applications. A 4 mA to 20 mA speed setting is available for variable speed applications. Adjustable droop permits load division and balancing among parallel operated prime movers. Droop can be set with a knob on the front panel between 0–10. The load limiter knob allows you to limit the governor output manually.
    EM80 - EM300 Actuator
    Woodward EM-80 and EM-300 gear-motor actuators are intended to be mounted on large diesel, gas, and gasoline engines, and on all types of turbines, to control the position of engine fuel racks, turbine fuel valves, turbine and turbocharger variable geometry, and to handle timing control.

    These systems are well suited for engines without a mechanical drive or hydraulic oil supply. A dedicated driver controls the actuator position and allows monitoring of most features. The EM-80 and EM-300 are freely programmable to meet many customer requirements.

    The EM-80 and EM-300 are all-electric actuator systems that provide 40 degrees of actuator output rotation. Each system consists of a three-phase brushless ac motor which drives a high-precision planetary reduction gear box. A dedicated driver controls the actuator position and allows monitoring of most features. PC/Windows based software facilitates the system setup.

    The EM-80 and EM-300 are freely programmable to meet many customer requirements.

    R-serie Actuator
    Woodward’s R-11 and R-30 electric actuators provide high torque rotary travel to precisely position various types of control valves and other mechanisms that operate in high-temperature, high vibration locations. In reciprocating engine applications, these valves may include:
    • Fuel throttles
    • Waste-gates
    • Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)
    • Compressor recirculation (bypass)
    • Waste heat recovery (WHR), and exhaust.

    Additional applications on reciprocating engines include variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbocharger actuation.

    The R-11 and R-30 actuators accept a position command and use a brushless DC electric motor driving an integral gear box to move the output shaft through 73 degrees of rotational output position.

    The cast metal modular design includes an electronic control module and integral motor housing that attach directly to the gearbox assembly. The 73 degrees of travel enables the actuator to be connected directly to butterfly-type throttles, eliminating the need for failure-prone intermediate linkage.

    Both the R-11 and R-30 actuators accept a position command signal from some other controlling device to position the actuator’s output shaft. The actuators output shaft is moved to match the requested position. Internal electronic feedback assures the output shaft moves precisely to the requested position. 

    These actuators accept either a 4 to 20 mA, 0 to 200 mA, or PWM (pulse width modulated) command signal while providing a 4 to 20 mA output shaft position signal that external devices can use as direct feedback of the output shaft’s position.

    Three discrete inputs select the type of command input signal to be used and the direction of the output shaft on an increase of command signal. A single discrete output can indicate when a shutdown is active. A key-switch input safely powers down the internal control module and motor while keeping the unit connected to the system’s power source. An access plate allows electrical connections to be made directly on the control module in the actuator housing and all wiring goes through gland nuts to maintain an ingress protection rating of IP67. The actuators are able to operate over a temperature range of –40 °C to +105 °C.

    Proact Actuator
    The ProAct™ Analog product line is a family of electric actuators intended to be mounted on-engine
    to control varying functions including (but not limited to):
    • Fuel rack positioning
    • Timing control,
    • Throttle valve,
    • Wastegate positioning.

    The actuator is effectively a positioner with an integral driver, which will accept a position command signal from another device in the system such as a speed control.

    In addition, the ProAct Digital Plus actuators include an integral digital driver capable of controlling the actuator, communicating with the outside control system, and containing on-board software and intelligence to realize monitoring and customizing functions.

    The actuators are designed to be base- or flange-in an on-engine environment and can therefore withstand high levels of vibration and temperature extremes. They all have a 0.625-36 serrated tooth terminal shaft, and an optional rotation scale and indicator are available for visible travel detection. The actuators accept analog or PWM position command signals.

    In addition, the Digital Plus driver accepts CAN position command signals and can be configured for redundant command signals. It monitors all available internal and external signals, and annunciates any detected faults through a discrete output. An analog output provides actual position indication, and a discrete input is available to remotely shut down the actuator.

    Additional features of the Digital Plus driver include on-line and off-line diagnostics, current limiting based on driver electronics temperature, CAN communications, and service port communications.

    F-serie Actuator

    The F-Series Modular Actuator is designed to be engine-mounted for various position control functions on reciprocating engines used in industrial and on-highway service.

    The F-Series Modular Actuator is an electric bi-directional actuator with an integral driver. The actuator accepts a position demand signal from a master controller and drives the 0–70 degree output shaft to the demanded position based on an internal shaft position sensor.

    The actuator can accept a PWM, J1939 CAN, 4-20 mA, or 0-5 V position demand signal. The electric actuator requires no hydraulics, pneumatics, or gear train. The CANbus protocol is SAE J1939. The high-efficiency torque motor delivers 1.4 Nm steady-state torque and 2.7 Nm transient torque at 105 °C, 12 Vdc.

    The directions of shaft rotation (CW or CCW) and shutdown (0% or 100%) are configurable. The Service Tool software includes an Auto Find Mechanical Stops feature and an Auto Inertia Test feature to simplify scaling the actuator to the systems mechanical stops and setting the position control dynamics.

    For status purposes, a relay driver output is provided that changes state whenever the controller experiences a configured fault or error condition. A configurable 0–5 Vdc position feedback signal (TPS) is available for monitoring the actuator output shaft position and for potential feed-forward control. Discrete inputs are provided for a Run Enable/Key Switch and to set the CAN ID The F-Series actuator operates on 10–32 Vdc. The ambient operating temperature range is –40 to +105 °.

    L-serie Actuator

    The Woodward L-Series Integrated Engine Control System is the first engine speed control to deliver so much in a package this compact.

    The L-Series Control System is available in a variety of mechanical configurations, including one integrated into a rotary diesel fuel pump and one integrated with a throttle body or a throttle body and mixer. The externally mounted systems can be configured for clockwise or counter-clockwise (standard) shaft rotation for increasing fuel.

    PGA-EG Actuator

    The Woodward PGA-EG Governor/ Actuator is designed specifically for marine applications requiring electronic engine control with mechanical backup. The governor/actuator combines the proven dependability of the hydro mechanical PG governor with the flexibility of an electronic control.

    The mechanical governor features pneumatic tracking of the speed setting, which gives complete backup speed control from a remote location, with only a slight change in engine speed should the electronic signal fail. The PGA-EG can be used with a variety of Woodward electronic controls. The backup hydro-mechanical governor gives it redundant speed control for critical marine needs.

    Backup speed control is accomplished by the simultaneous operation of hydro mechanical (PGA) and electronic (EG) governing systems. To achieve backup control, the electronic system must be reverse-acting (an increase in fuel is called for by a reduction in current to the actuator portion of the PGA-EG).

    Setting the speed of the mechanical governor slightly higher than that of the electronic governing system causes the mechanical portion of the PGA-EG to always seek a fuel setting higher than that being controlled by the electrical part of the PGA-EG. Electrical control thus controls the fuel position because of the least-fuel-selection feature. Should the electronic signal to the PGA-EG drop to 0, due to some problem in the system, the electric actuator will call for an increased fuel position above the setting of the mechanical governor. At this point, the mechanical speed setting is lower and the ballhead controls the engine-fuel setting. Although the speed will be slightly higher under mechanical control, no gross overspeed or shutdown occurs due to a loss in signal from the electronic control. Direct-acting PGA-EG controls are available. These units will go to minimum fuel on loss of electronic control signal.

    PG-EG Actuator

    The PG-EG Actuator is used on diesel engines to replace PGA/PGG/PGE-type governors, providing the advantages of electronic control and use the existing PG-type drive and linkage.

    The PG-EG Actuator is available with several servo options, giving a full range of work and torque output.

    This actuator is available for use with either direct- or reverse-acting electronic controls. Direct-acting actuators will cause a shutdown if the electrical current to the actuator is lost or interrupted. Direct- and reverse-acting units use the same hardware and can be re-calibrated from one into the other.

    A 140 ┬Ám wire-mesh filter is accessible from the outside of the PG-EG. The filter protects the small orifice in the pilot valve, which is an integral part of the electric actuator.

    UG Actuator

    The UG-Actuator can be used with diesel, gasoline, or natural gas engines, and with steam and industrial gas turbines. The UG-Actuator has a self-contained oil sump, so a separate oil supply is not required.

    The UG-Actuator offers the advantages of electronic control and load sharing systems while using the convenient, existing UG-8 type drives and linkages. The actuator provides the muscle for Woodward analog controls such as the 2301, as well as Woodward digital controls.

    The UG-Actuator is ideal for installations involving unattended starts. The optional self-contained MPU simplifies the conversion of a UG-8 controlled engine or turbine to an electronically controlled engine. A gear which has been specifically designed to operate the MPU means that the electronic control will receive sharp, clean speed signals.
